Police brutality in SA: what the data tells us

This dashboard is an interface to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate's (IPID) database of more than 47,000 complaints registered against the police between 1 April 2012 and 31 March 2020. The majority of these complaints come from members of the public. Death related cases are mandatorily reported to IPID by the police. You can home in on any police station for an overview of cases registered there or any individual case for a “progress report”. The data demonstrates that police officers implicated in violent crimes routinely escape accountability. Learn more at Viewfinder.
